Debra L. Hickman, Ph.D.

Dr. Hickman has developed a funded research program that focuses on the improvement of the health and well-being of research animal models. Her goal is to improve the translational value of animal models through the development of novel evaluation methods that can directly benefit translational medicine, in addition to improving the care of animals that are used in research. Her administrative experience as the PI of multiple grants, and her tenure as the Director of the Indiana University School of Medicine Laboratory Animal Resource Center and as Chief for Veterinary Services at the VA Medical Center in Portland, OR, attest to her ability to meet both administrative and scientific needs of IPREP. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) and of the American College of Animal Welfare (ACAW The combination of these two veterinary specialties provides Dr. Hickman with a unique, whole animal perspective in the development of behavioral assessment of clinical and emotional well-being.
